- Fruits
It is better to eat fruits than to drink fruit juices. There are lots of fruits to choose from. Some are available in can, and others can be bought frozen and/or dried. Yet, of course, it is better to eat fresh fruits. 2 cups of fruit a day is good for a 2000 calorie diet.
- Vegetables
Vegetables are the good source of nutrients that prevent high blood pressure, reduce the risk of stroke, complications in the heart, and some types of cancer. It also lowers the risk of eye problems and even helps in the digestion. The darker the color, the more nutritious it is. - Calcium-rich foods
For stronger teeth and bones, milk is the best source of calcium. When losing weight, there are available milks in the market that is low in fat or fat-free. You may also choose lactose-free milk or calcium-fortified drinks if you can’t drink milk. - Whole grains
Eating whole grains fights cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, digestive problems, and even gives longer healthy life. You can consume grains through breads, cereals, and crackers.
- Protein
Lean poultry and lean meats are mostly preferred. Cook it in any cooking method especially in methods like baking and grilling to avoid the use of oil. Protein can also be consumed from fish, beans, nuts, and seeds.
- Limit Saturated Fats
Replace saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats to lower the risk of heart disease.
- Limit Salt
Make sure that you will only consume less than 2,300 mg of sodium or about 1 teaspoon of salt per day. - Water
Water is very important to our body as it makes up two-thirds of a human body’s weight. It serves as a lubricant and regulates the body temperature by perspiration. It also helps in digestion as it prevents constipation and by washing out body toxins. Six to eight glasses of water a day should be consumed as it is said to be just the right amount.
